A couple of days ago I wrestled with this issue. I just wanted to enable a general layout.html file which other .html files could use as a basis. The issue had me stumped until I read the Hapi.js documentation (yeah, one should always read the docs):

vision includes built-in support for view layouts. It comes disabled by default, because it may conflict with other layout systems that specific view engines may provide. We recommend choosing only one layout system.

How to persist login sessions between redeploying Craft CMS and thus prevent users from being logged out. I couldn’t find a guide on how to do this for Craft CMS so when I finally figured it out I decided to share it here.

This has been tested with Craft CMS 2.6 and PHP 7.0.x on Heroku with the Heroku Redis addon. The following instructions expect that a Redis connection string is available as an environment variable called REDIS_URL. You’ll also need to add ext-redis to your composer.json file. Finally, you’ll need to update two files.

This autumn I had a first look at Haskell. I’ve been meaning to write a post about my initial thoughts on it for a while now. Here it is.

To learn about Haskell I started reading Learn you a Haskell for Great Good. I also started trying to solve programming puzzles on Project Euler.

I spent a lot of time fighting with Haskell’s compiler. But once I finally made the program run I got to experience the “Haskell correctness guarantee” which is that code that compiles have a very high chance of running with no errors. This also made it easier to do large code reorganizations since I would instantly know if something was wrong.

Eg såg ti filmer. Mange av dei gjorde inntrykk (og to av dei fekk meg til å duppe av). Her vil eg gjerne trekkje fram tre av filmane som gjorde mest inntrykk.

Tomorrow: Av den enkle grunn at den gir meg håp for framtida. Styrsteparten av klimafilmene der ute er for det meste berre doom & gloom. Slike filmer får oss til å innsjå alvoret, men dei fungerer ikkje nødvendigvis så bra til å mane til handling. Det gjer denne dokumentaren. Dokumentaren tek ikkje berre for seg miljø i seg sjølv men også meir djupe systemiske problem ved samfunnet vårt. Og ikkje minst så viser dokumentaren at det er ein heil del som kan gjerast og som blir gjort kvar dag. Inspirerande rett og slett.

Greenfield projects are the best. These are the projects that start afresh where developers rejoice in being unencumbered by reams and reams of legacy code. The choice of technology is still open and the code complexity so low it’s easy to reason about.

Flash forward 6-8 months and things may start to seem less rosy. At this point the developers have iterated themselves to a point where they have a database, a server and a client side application talking to each other. This solution is a big hulking boat by now with lots of moving parts and its become hard to turn around quickly. Developers are busy plugging holes and re-applying hull paint.

There are a certain range of parts/cogs/tubes/solutions a programmer will always be creating and recreating. Solutions such as login functionality, file storage functionality, basic resource editing, continuous integration, logging setup etc. And when tasks such as these have become rote routine and quick to do it’s time to let someone less experienced handle them.

That’s an insight I gained from a podcast on programming. One of the podcast guests noted that if the task was very familiar and easy to do (for that person) they would let someone less experienced with the task handle it instead.

The world changes, and so must software. This echoes an earlier post about fighting the fear of being in production. A piece of software is never done. A piece of software can be done to the point that it meets the requirements of users, of interconnected software, of the world at large.

But then the world changes.

Again and again.

Constantly.

Your application is now in production. People are trying it out, trusting it. It’s scary. But you must now keep improving it.

Undeniably the stakes have been raised. Changing code becomes more risky, more risky than we programmers tend to enjoy. One mistake and the users might lose total faith in the system.

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”

This is a convenient truism. However, one might also argue that “a code base that is not actively maintained will eventually fail.” Failure can come in many forms. Failure causes include security vulnerabilities and incompatibility issues with other software. However, a primary reason for failure is simply that what’s required of the application change and it has no chance of keeping up.

Imagine going into a friend’s office just to grab an instruction manual. Now imagine that as you open the door you get a strong smell of dry parchment. With the door open you discover a vast mound of manuals. You just want to get a manual but you want to grab the most recent instruction manual.

So, you start digging. As you sift through the manuals you discover that most of the manuals are old and even contain lot of crossed out text. In other words the old outdated manuals themselves contain outdated parts within. It’s time to abandon hope. You leave your colleague’s office to go back to yours. And you send him or her an email to please send you the most recent instruction manual. It ends up taking a week but you finally get the most recent instruction manual. And as you pop it open you discover that 30-40% of the manual is crossed out as no longer relevant to the manual.

I felt the previous wording (preserved at the bottom of this post) came of as too braggy. Rather than simply stating that I’ve bought a shiny new thing I would say that I’ve taken some of my income and invested in a keyboard that I’ve come to appreciate very much.

I didn’t take long before I started traveling to and from work with this keyboard in my laptop. Morever, I also started including a towel to have underneath the keyboard when I type to dampen the resonance from the keyboard case thus helping the enjoyable “thick” “thocks” of the typing stand out more. Call me crazy, but is actually quite enjoyable. Just listen to this.

Download iReport (Sourceforge Download).

Just run ./ireport inside the iReport/bin folder.

For Java 8: You will need to edit the iReport file using a text editor and change the line:

to something like this line instead:

--jdkhome \'"/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64"\'

Why choosing a tech stack is about picking your battles

Picking the tech from which to develop an application is about picking your battles. That’s something I’ve come to realize more and more.

Tech stack: A term used for the collection of technologies that underlie any given application. Furthermore it’s often useful to picture an application as a stack of layers (technologies) that build upon each other.

Let’s start with a question. Imagine you have a certain problem at hand and you see that this could be solved by creating an application. You’ve solved similar problems before with technologies you’ve since become familiar with. This is a project where you’re free to choose between whatever technologies you want. Anything goes.

What will you do? Will you:

A: Choose to build a solution using a programming language you know super well and a tech stack you’re very familiar with.
B: Choose to use a new programming language on a new platform with technologies you’ve only heard of before.

I’ve been looking to buy a laptop for a while now. And by a while I mean a long while.

So far I managed to narrow my choices down to Macbook Air, Thinkpad x250, Dell XPS 13 and Multicom Talisa U731. There seems to be pros and cons with all of them.

The Thinkpad x250 famously have a good keyboard and battery life. Moreover, I think it would be nice to use the red track point as it would allow me to keep my fingers mostly close to the “home row” meaning the keyboard keys “asdf” and “jklø” (Norwegian keyboard). The form factor is also nice. The biggest down side is the price point.

Looking out from the airport express bus the landscape looked like some volcanic moon landscape. Beyond gray this landscape had been painted with plentiful dabs of rusty brown, pleasant blue, modest yellow and darkish gray.

After a short while we met Björn whom we were renting an airbnb apartment from. While driving he offered to make a detour and gave us a quick tour of Reykjavik.

From the little I have seen thus far Reykjavik seem quite interesting with its small downtown area surrounded by four lane roads.

“Can we remove the need of clicking this button here?”

At a work place meeting the other day I stepped outside of the meeting agenda to point out at an issue with the application we were building. “Everytime we fire up this application we have to click this button here. Just to dismiss a warning. Can we do something about this?”

The actual problem was that almost all of the application was served securely over a https connection while a small part of it was served over a plain http connection. Thus we had to actively ignore browser warnings each time we wanted to view the application. No one had simply taken the time to move everything to be served over https.

Program for maintainability

Here’s a small epiphany I had the other day.

When building software applications we should program for maintainability. It’s common to talk about “programming for scale, change, stability” etc. However, I would argue that aiming for maintainable code should be the chief goal.

I choose to define maintainable code as being open to change. It’s not about trying to predict the future instead it’s about acknowledging that there will be a long unknown future for the application. Who knows what demands the world will put on your code? The application should be able to grow/shrink to meet whatever goal you set for it be it scalability, robustness, security and so on.

Today I finally managed to delete my Google calendar. I’ve also deleted all my Google contacts. Now my smartphone syncronizes its contacts and calendar with my own mail-in-a-box server. My smartphone is no different really. I even still use Google’s quite usable calendar app. The phone just no longer syncs its data to Google or Samsung. Which is nice.

Arguably, I still use both Youtube and Google+ but at least I no longer give away information about all my events and my contacts.

It’s day two at the Gathering 2012, I’ve awoken from my slumber on the concrete flooring only shielded by a thin blow-up cover and my sleeping bag. One of my earplugs had fallen out while I was sleeping, but it apparently hadn’t woken me up. The music is still thundering throughout the great Vikingship, however at 10am it’s a bit subdued. Yawning and stretching, I crawl out of my warm sleeping bag and sit down on one of the green fold-up seats located in the bleachers (where I was sleeping on the concrete). I take a couple of minutes and I stare out into wonderful mish-mash of rows upon rows of computers, habituated by sleeping nerds and their intricately crafted shelves. It is a unique festival.

In my previous post I argued that games can be used to prototype alternative economical systems. This post introduces the sci-fi MMO called EVE online, a game which features an advances virtual economy. Could EVE be used to prototype new economies?

Eve Online is all about trading, alliances and war over resources. The only thing that is generated automatically in the game are various asteroids which in turn form the basis for transport ships, massive fighter ships, space stations and all sorts of other items. Players form corporations ranging from small pirating groups to large well-oiled hiarchical organizations. While WoW’s players are spread over a number of “sharded” servers (identical worlds), EVE’s world exist on a single shard hosted by multiple servers. So, if you take two WoW players chances are they’re not playing on the same server, same world. However, in the case of two EVE players meeting each other they’re undoubtedly playing on the same server. EVE’s single sharded world enables all sorts of meta-gaming in the form of espionage and sabotage outside and inside of the game. Some people play the game entirely through spreadsheets as an economist for a large corporation or as a spy infiltrating enemy corporations and working their way up. Last Wednesday I saw a movie called a Pervert’s Guide to Ideology (watch trailer). Result: Mind Blown. The main focal point of that movie is an intellectual superstar called Slavoj Zizek. I ended searching some more and found this Big Think video where Zizek gives some thoughts on capitalism.

Zizek points out that anti-capitalists are often ashamed to critisize capitalism. Their shame stems from not being able to provide real alternatives to capitalism.

I’ve been researching how to build thriving communities. And I found four enlightning videos on the topic. All because Kompiler (Pils & Programmering) is great and has potential for even more.

Adam Brault LXJS 2013. If you care about building a compassionate community this is an absolute must-see. The key takeaway for me was that a community should achieve greatness on its own terms. Last Saturday September 28 I attended the third TEDxBergen conference. It was my first time attending a TED event here I’ll just make a short writeup.

For those of you who haven’t heard of TED before, it’s an organization organized around “ideas worth sharing.” TED organizes various events where people get to share their ideas and the best presentations get put online on ted.com. Also, the TED organization also lend its brand to other events allowing them to call themselves TEDx events.

It’s silly. But in my mind I think this is pretty cool.

I’ve been postponing my photo organizing for quite a while now, because I just couldn’t settle for uploading everything to Facebook or Flikr. I needed some system for organizing my photos locally into events, rating and tagging them, before uploading the organized photos automatically to services like Flikr or Facebook. This way I would just need to organize my photos once and select which services to upload to. Properly tagging my photos would also make it easier for me when I need stockphotos because I could just search for them.

På veg heim med mine venner ein sein kveld.

Eg fortalde dei om ein reise eg hadde til Polen i åttende klasse i regi av Hvite Busser. Eg fortalde om ei saltgruve i Krakow der me var nøydde til å gå lange trapper ned, til me var på bunnen og kunne skue ei praktfull kirke skåret ut av saltet. Guiden vår som sa at ein tente to år på kvart besøk her ned kunne med glede meddele at han var 483 år gammal, eller noko slikt.

Eg drøymde eg var i ein spansk versjon av Bergen, eller noko slikt. Eg hadde ikkje klart sove. Klokka var seks og eg gjekk ut i byen. Det var som om heile byen var badet i eit skjær av azurblå, og eg heile vegen kunne lukte knusktørr sand.

På festplassen satte eg med ned ved vatnet, på ein klassisk kontorpult med ein pc på. Eg skulle berre sjekke noko kjapt. Ei venninne står litt bortenfor og ropar lattermildt etter meg, “eg lurar på. Sover du aldri?” Eg svarar ikkje på det, men eg smilar, går frå kontorbordet og kjem bort til ho. Ho står med to ungar, som ho er ute på tur med. Me tek eit bilete saman med speilrefleksen hennar. Så, går eg vidare.

Drømte at eg var med ein gjeng av forretningsfolk. Alle lo og skrålte medan dei delte triks for å kunne sno seg unna skatten. Det var snakk om å kunne bruke inntektstapet i eit underfirma for å slippe unna skatt eller noko liknande. Ikkje heilt logisk noko av det.

Ein fyr i gjengen var ein mentor, ein meir sympatisk type. Me blei ståande å snakka etter at gjengen med forretningsfolk hadde tatt vegen heim. Forretningsfolkene hadde ropt at dersom firmaet mitt hadde noko som kunne hjelpe dei økonomisk så måtte eg ta kontakt med dei.

Driver å skriver på masteren for tiden, som er ein heilt greit oppleving må eg sei. :) Ting som gjenstår er å skrive ferdig kapitlene om teori, mine funn, diskusjon og konklusjon. Så, må alt omarbeidast igjen og igjen til det er gull innen midten av August. Sitter med litt over hundre sider nå, og eg _veit _eg har funnet noke ut. Må berre fortelje det på ein overbevisande måte. Men poenget med denne posten er berre å skrive litt om alle dei andre tankane eg går å snurre på.

Etter eg las innlegget til Jarle, så tenkte eg berre at eg skulle spinne litt vidare på denne problemstillinga med å få fleire mennesker til å bidra for eit betre miljø. Det er teikn på at me er på veg i riktig retning. Dei siste vekene så har Miljøpartiet dei grønne fått særs gode prognoser inn mot valget (krysser fingrane). Eg tenkjer det kanskje ikkje er så rart sidan stortingskandidaten deira for Oslo Rasmus Hansson er så god til å snakke for seg. Oppfordrer sterkt til å ta ein titt på NRK Debatten 06.06.13. På debatten så satt Hansson i publikum og sa rett ut at Norge er nøydd til å tenkje på korleis me skal slutte med olje om 20 år.

“Med talen i sin makt er vegen til rikdom lagt.” Eg kom på i dag at eg ville gjerne dele nokre eksempeler på offentleg tale. Tok eit retorikkfag for ein tid tilbake og eg må sei eg liker framføringer og taler der folk tar til ordet.

Denne fyrste filmen er riktignok ikkje ein tale, men her forsøkjer programlederen gang på gang å settje fast advokat Ted Olson som skulle kjempe for retten til å gifte seg. Programlederen har til slutt ikkje så mykje han skulle ha sagt.

Forskningsbasert viljestyrke

Chiller i soafen, drikker kaffe og leser. Nyter det å sjå regnet falle utanfor til lyden av orientalsk chillout. Har begynnt på boken The Willpower Instinct, anbefales. Er generelt sett skeptisk til slike bøker, som ein burde vere uansett om den er forskningsbasert eller ikkje. Denne boken klarer kunstykket å forbli forskningsbasert samtidig som den lekent formidler, diggbart.

Forfatteren Kelly McGonigal har også gitt ein forelesning med utgangspunkt i boka som eg har lagt ved nedenfor. Sjekk ut. :)

Unngå overvåkning, tre tips

I lys av Prism avsløringane så blei mange IT-folk både overrasket og ikkje så overrasket. Eg har på ingen måte ein særleg sterk sikkerhet nett no, men no har eg i alle fall fått forska litt på det og funnet fram til tre tips.

Det er hovedsakeleg to ting å tenkje på: Sikkerheten i sjølve kommunikasjonen, altså kor lett det er å lytte på kommunikasjonen. Og sikkerheten hos den du kommuniserer til, eksempelvis du kan ha ein trygg kopling mot gmail via https, men dersom gmail velger å overgi dataene dine til andre så er du like langt. Eller med andre ord, det er samme kor trygg Snapchat programvaren er viss mottakeren går inn for å ta ein screenshot og dele den.

Den dekadente ytringsfrihetsøvelsen

Fjordmann fekk 75 000 kr til å skrive bok. Det skapte reaksjonar sjølvsagt, bla. i form av denne tweeten. Som eg tenkte eg skulle reagere på med litt fleire teikn enn 14o.

Det er noe dekadent over den norske ytringsfrihetsøvelsen. Hvor lenge gi støtte til ekstremister for å bevise hvor liberal en selv er? ~ Link til tweet.

Det er vanskeleg å kritisere ytringsfriheten, men denne tweeten forsøkjer i alle fall å problematisere vårt forhold til den. Lilla Sølhusvik hinter her til at Norge deltar i ei ytringsfrihetsøvelse, ein stad mellom ei øving og ein eksersis. Vidare er øvinga visstnok dekadent, som om det er ein luksus som berre oss rike, naive, sjølv-realiserande nordmenn kan ta oss råd til “i ein tid der me er omringa av ekstremisme.” Og så kan eg problematisere vidare og vidare i eit forsøk på å nyansere djupare og djupare. Men eg ville berre slengje inn nokre tankar.

Country music playing. Keyboard typing. Still seeing a little light out over the fjord outside my parents’ house here in Tysvær. Just finished setting up a server in Bergen to host WordPress sites. It’s a task that might seem easy for seasoned system administrators. However, for me (not being a seasoned sysadmin) it was a nice chance to learn something new by setting all this up via command line remotely, talking to a machine several hours away (if traveling by bus). Feels satisfying somehow. Command line definitely adds to the coolness factor.

Hver gang det dukker opp diskusjoner om hva som er mannlig og kvinnelig føler jeg meg fremmedgjort. Og noen ganger direkte provosert. Fordi det bildet de tegner opp som typisk mannlig, stemmer så dårlig med bildet jeg har av faren min. Det stemmer dårlig med meg selv også. Norge bruker penger på konsulenter, og til tider ein god del. Her vil eg berre raske saman nokre lenker og litt tankar.

Konsulentverksemda ligg ikkje så nært på kroppen for folk flest. Det er som regel kun store institusjonane, store bedrifter, som har råd rett og slett til å hyre inn konsulentar. For det blir fort dyrt.

What I’ve noticed is that the page constantly link to compilations and collections of images that they have on their web page (that’s what most Facebook pages do naturally). The real kicker is that when you go to that page you’ll be forced to register by logging in with your Facebook profile. Forced is a strong word here but there ~~is in fact no other way~~ to access their content without letting them access you. Correction: By visiting their homepage at otakumode.com, you’ll be able to view the content. Tidleg (relativt tidleg) ein søndag har ein gjeng i frå Spillmakerlauget samla seg ved Østre – Hus for Lydkunst og Elektronisk Musikk. Andledningen er ein Virtual Reality workshop og eg var så heldig å få ein invitasjon til å kome litt tidleg for å få prøve utstyret, seinere på kvelden skulle det vere gratis for andre å komme å teste.

Folk sto høfleg å venta på tur. Eg blei ståande å snakke med spelutviklerar og folk som var meir entusiastar og venner av spelutviklerane (slik som eg). Eg poengterte at når me sto slik i kø for å teste denne teknologien, “dette nye,” så kunne eg ikkje unngå å tenkje tilbake, langt tilbake, til korleis det må ha vore når folk skulle teste telefonen som teknologi eller lys som kom av straum. “Får litt sånn Steampunk vibber. Tenke litt på den industrielle revolusjonen,” sa eg. Dei andre smilte og nikka med. Ein sa, “kanskje blir dette ein revolusjon?” Det har blitt forsøkt gong på gong å få lansert ein VR teknologi for massene. Kanskje går det bra denne gongen? Ein ting skal seiast er at teknologien _er _imponerande, og blir kontinuerlig forbetra. Ballen ligg no meir og meir hos utviklerane som ein utfordring til å kome opp med spel og programmer som tek denne teknologien i bruk på ein smart måte.

Problem scenario: “Fred” is sitting and writing on his thesis. On his computer lie over a hundred of pdf’s. Searching and finding the right pdf is easy from the comfort of a computer but more of a chore when typing on a tablet.

Solution scenario: After writing for a while and finding himself in need of searching through a paper Fred decides that he wants to use his tablet for this. Fred is a fast typer and finds the relevant pdf file easily which he then right-clicks and selects ‘open on tablet.’ His tablet lying on his desk comes to life revealing his pdf fully opened and ready to be read.

My reaction was that of, “what is the Norwegian government doing about this?” So I searched online.

~~That last search yielded one result.~~ Edit: Thankfully a bit more attention have been given, though our government remain impressively still. I understand that there are a lot of very complicated crisises around the world as well as that the news agencies have to focus on cases that are newsworthy and of public interest. So I wonder if this isn’t such a case. Politics is prioritization of resources and many issues deservere attention I just wish this has gotten some more national attention and perhaps even a reaction from our government.

A friend of mine told me that they’re planning to start a Pils & Programmering and wondered what tips & tricks I had to give. Here I’ll try to share some of our experiences, give tips and hopefully some inspiration. First some notable documents:

A Norwegian article that provides some historic backstory. We started Pils & Programmering October 2011 to be a nice excuse for coding on a Friday evening but also as a space for practise, socializing and for entrepreneurial connections to form.
A github makefile for Pils & Programmering. After the first Pils & Programmering groups started showing up nationally and internationally we created this document as an attempt to anchor our vision.

tl;dr? -> Gather as many it-interested people as you can, be nerdy, be social, create! :)

Late night sysadmin’in: Repurposing my old laptop to serve up my master’s project

After having a great session of Friday Night Lightning with the gang from Pils & Programmering I was just going to drop by my dedicated study space at my University and drop of my laptop.

I ended up sticking around tinkering on an old laptop of mine setting it up to be a server while listening to a couple of interviews with Jeri Elsworth, an inspiring self-taught engineer.

A server is a computer which is typically connected to the internet and serves up files or is able to perform other tasks like resending e-mail, being a remote backup space amongst other useful tasks.

Programutvikling som teaterproduksjon

Her er nokre tankar før eg raser ut i januarkulden.

Forrige torsdag så var eg på Infofest med Immaturus, eit studentteater som eg har hatt fornøyelsen av å få vere del av i fleire år. Her vil eg berre drodle ned nokre tankar om kva programvareutvikling kanskje kan lære i frå skuespelarverden.

Stemninga var flott. Spente skodespelerar. Spente regissørar. Spenninga dreidde seg om korvidt skodespelarane skulle få vere med på spanande prosjekt og korvidt regissørane skulle få skodespelerar til å realisere sine spanande prosjekt. Like viktig er produsenten og produksjonsapparatet. I alt var det tre prosjekter som stod i startgropa foran eit nytt semester, klar til å jobbe knallhardt mot ein premiere. Etter at arrangementet var over og eg kunne ta meg ein velfortjent øl etter å ha bemannet baren for kvelden så traff eg på ein annen programmerer som bla. jobber med å ordne lys for teaterproduksjoner.

“Det kan virke som om humanistiske studier ikke passer inn i et samfunn som ser ut til å utvikle seg i stadig mer instrumentalistisk retning. Alt som ikke fører til en kortsiktig fortjeneste, må begrunnes. Alt måles i penger. Ved universitet og høgskoler nedlegges studier i fremmedspråk og andre kulturfag fordi de ikke er lønnsomme. Lønnsomhetsprinsippet ser ut til å være samfunnets sterkeste prinsipp. Det hjelper imidlertid ikke å ha penger hvis vi ikke opplever livet som meningsfylt. Pils & Programmering blei grunnlagt (dvs. fyrste event avholdt) ein fredag det herrens år totusenogelleve, 21 oktober. Snart eit år seinare så har me 32 møter bak oss, 51 personer som har sagt ja til å bli invitert til kvar event og 130 likes på fb-sida vår.

Guess what world? This guy’s a procrastinator (I’m talking about me, yes). We’ve all got our demons to fight, big or small. I do get stuff done, however the number of random allnighters it has taken is undeniable. “Overtime is failure of management,” as decreed in the kung fu of extreme programming (it really is).

This post is inspired by this marvellous chrome app called Stayfocusd, which simply times the pages you set it to time blocking you out when time’s up. Especially inspiring is occasional conversational dialogues, like when I wanted to extend the allowance time today. It starts out at five minutes, but I subsequently lowered it to one minute which was much praised by the app. I must’ve counted ten dialogue boxes imploring me not to go and raise the timer. Even, though I must’ve hurt the app’s feelings I stand firm by my action. Regardless, the point is after telling me off a last time the app directed the browser to go to a web page on procrastination. In short, it was great. The text hit some of the pain points I’ve been somewhat unable to identify myself.

I tend to spend a little too much time on Youtube. Doesn’t seem too productive perhaps, but still feels better than watching tv. So, many channels so much wateful staring and fluff. On the intertubes you just fetch experiences at your heart’s delight, getting lost in their connections. Anyhow, on to a list of dancing videos. Sometimes I get lost just watching dance videos, it happened today, has happened before and will probably happen again. :)

I går hadde eg sjansen til å vere forelesar i faget interaksjonsdesign i samarbeid med Regine. Me kjørte to kjappe introduksjonar i henholdsvis kognitive aspekter og sosial interaksjon. Deretter gjekk me raskt over i å dele dei om lag tjue oppmøtte inn i grupper der dei fekk diskutere seg imellom, før me så tok gruppene sine synspunkt opp i plenum. Det blei nokre flotte meiningsutvekslingar der nokre synspunkt eller tankar gjorde seg gjeldande:

Ettermiddag på lesesalen. I morgen skal eg ha ein framføring av ein facebook applikasjon, før eg så har ei veke på å få ferdigstilt ein rapport på 15s. Heldigvis har eg tre andre flinke folk med meg i dette arbeidet, og eg har (framleis) roen mykje takka være desse avspenningstimane til SIB. Onsdagar 15 – 16, gratis drop-in.

Produktivitet opptek meg (litt for mykje).

Februar holdt eg eit seminar for styret i Immaturus, der eg holdt eit innlegg basert på alskens produktivitetsressurser. Det blei ein god diskusjon med mykje bra innspel i frå styret, og eg har forsøkt å samle alle tipsa på ei beskjeden side.

Her er juksearket for produktivitet, “but remember with great power comes great responsibility.”

Medan eg sit å lyttar til mjuke tonar i frå NRK klassisk, så slår ein tanke meg: Kor mange informasjonskonsulentar jobbar på UiB? Kor mange utvalg, utredningar, kommisjonar, styrer, møtearenaer og fora finnes det på Universitetet i Bergen? Som infovitar så må eg spørje meg sjølv, og deg kjære lesar, om tingenes tilstand er gode nok. Eg kjem i alle fall med eit infovitar-basert løysingsforslag i denne artikkelen.

Små oppgåver omsatt i poeng. Rusavhengige bør bli tilbudt eit sett med oppgåver alá det å kunne stå å selje Megafon. Dette kan ekspanderast til å omfatte andre små oppgåver, som f.eks. generelt reinhold av byen, styre og stell av blomster, av gravsteinar. Her må ein berre vere kreativ i opprettelsen av oppgåver. Og før du blir altfor forferda av dette, så kan eg sei at det allereie finst eit liknande konsept for mikrofrivillighet i USA: www.sparked.com !
_Poeng omsatt i metadon: _Om punkt 1 vil få folk til å protestera så vil kanskje dette enda meir? Ingen blir rike av å tigge etter pengar. Om ein ser på bistand til land i Afrika over tid, så er det landa som ikkje har mottatt bistand som står sterkast no (meir info om dette). Poenget mitt er at rusavhengige bør få tilgang til metadon, men samstundes måtte jobbe for det. Alt anna er passifiserande, og øydeleggjande.

Me må omrigge systemet slik at rusavhengige kan jobbe meir for seg sjølv, men fremfor alt må me omrigge systemet slik at det ikkje går an å tene penger på rusavhengige. Faktumet er at det ligg ein stor kriminell gevinst i å aktivt holde nede desse menneska. Gjer me det slik at rusavhengige kan jobbe for seg sjølv, ved å utføre småoppgåver for kommunen og omsette det i lovleg metadon så håper eg at det kan vere ein krok på døra for langerane og samstundes ein styrking av kjensla av nytteverdi hos desse menneska. Desse menneska som er avhengige av å henge rundt kriminelle for å få dopet sitt.

It’s a late Wednesday night, 03:22 to be exact. And I lost track of time because I found some four year old photos and started reminisce. This in turn made me really want to share these funny photos, and that plunged me straight into the dilemma of where to upload my photos or if I should upload them anywhere.

There seems to be a gut feeling in me, telling me that I should hold back from just uploading everything I have up on Facebook. People might get offended by my blatant self-glorification, others might be delighted to be able to reminisce with me having unearthed these photos and shared them.

In this post I provide a short explanation and a small collection of vocaloid videos that have English subs. In essence, Vocaloid are a breed of fully synthetic voice programs marketed as anime figures. Resulting in cyberdivas like Hatsune Miku and Megurine Luka. Hatsune Miku is definitely the most popular one, and she has even been hosting concerts for some years now.

Focus!

Last semester I came up with the prospect of putting stuff on ice, parking ideas so that I would revisit them at some later date. I selected two-three overall goals for the semester, and whenever ideas cropped up (which they did) I would simply save them for later. Thankfully, this led me to never biting over too much. Regretfully I didn’t bite over enough, meaning I kept a steady pace which was too slow. Anyhow.

I was diving through Youtube videos yet again, and I stumbled upon a YT channel called califaces. Very cool project, which is about interviewing interesting people. And then I happened upon one of the videos, where a 23 year old homeless person was interviewed. A bright, educated person who wound up on the streets because he didn’t have parents nor a government to support him.

Video is three years old, so this guy is the same age as me. Moreover he’s got a degree in English literature, which shows in his profound words at the end. Roughly paraphrased: You need to have a cube of sorts, a foundation, a basic starting point to be able to do anything with your life.

Juletreet skin ved sida av tven. Akvariet i hjørnet av stua forsøkjer å stjele litt merksemd, surklar vel høgt. Nyttår er overstått, tjuetolv er no iverksatt. Etter å ha kome heim i frå eit nyttårsselskap med onkel og tante, blei eg sittjande å sjå slutten av filmen I, Robot.

Det er morgon og eg er på veg til Universitetet for å sittje på den lune, trygge og delte lesesalsplassen eg har fått tildelt. På veg forbi den blå stein blir eg møtt av koppar som raslar av pengar. Eg har lite imot tiggarar for det er nok ikkje let uansett. På sett og vis så er det eit arbeid som tek heile dagen, og det ser ikkje morosamt ut. Ristande på hovudet og med ein open hand må eg berre meddele, “sorry man.” Andre brukar å tale på norsk har merka, moglegvis i trass.

I det siste har eg tenkt litt på det med sosialt påfyll, og med det dei tinga me gjer for å kjenne oss inkluderte i samfunnet rundt oss. Personleg sett så likar eg faktisk å sjå litt den sosiale input’en som det blir lagt fram i The Sims, som ei søyle ein er nødt til å vere litt obs på ellers går det utover alle dei andre tinga du søkjer å gjere i kvardagen.

Å velga seg eit språk. Huff puff. Er nesten lika vanskelig som det å velga mellom pokemon var i sin tid, hehe. Akkurat nå så rives eg litt mellom ulike språk, coffescript (video) + node.js (video) og python (yay, found a full Python tutorial Video series!) + Twisted (video introduction).

Eg hella mot coffescript i starten fordi, “it’s just javascript” som faktisk er lett å skrive. Til eksempel er Gmail er skrive i javascript, og dette er eit språk som ein nesten må lære seg for å få på plass dynamiske webapplikasjonar (Ref: Video). Eg kan lite om desse språka, det må eg berre sei. Men eg klarar berre ikkje heilt å bestemme meg. Skulle til å gå for å læra meg coffescript + node.js fordi den kombinasjonen skal vere i stand til å takle særs mykje trafikk. Men idag kom eg over denne blogposten Node.js is Cancer, der det er ein som kritiserar node.js sønder og saman. Sidan node.js er særs i vinden no for tida så kom motsvaret fort, og på Reddit finn du den vidare diskusjonen som bla. den artikkelen førte til. Ikkje heilt til å bli klok på. :)

Eit lite recap av ein bloggpost med tanker rundt produktivitet, relasjonar og sjakk. Denne helgen er eg i Oslo for å besøke ein fetter av meg (på min Filipinske side), Erwin, som nettopp har flyttet til Norge for å freiste lykka med å få seg jobb som sykepleiar. :) Norsken hans begynner å komme seg på plass, og det er nesten litt synd når eg kjem her med vestlandsdialekta mi og forvirrar med uttrykk som “egskjakje,” “kasynsduomna,” og “dumåkjenølameåspørromnoke.” Av eigen erfaring så er det typisk at når du lærar eit nytt språk, så er ei av utfordringane å komme over kjensla av at alle orda flyt saman.

Class discussion of novel artifacts: Nekomimi – Pure possibilities

Some weeks ago we had a number of presentations in class, of artifacts we felt displayed aspects of novel interaction. My chosen artifact was Nekomimi (neurowear.com).

Basically it’s a headpiece that only senses if you’re concentrating or not, in other words measures the amount of electrical activity in your brain. Nothing too fancy, meaning we’re definitely some way from reading distinct thoughts. And still, this does mean we are aldready at a point where we can determine whether or not someone is focusing (on their school work for instance). Imagine a teacher using this in class to see which students are dozing off. Furthermore the Nekomimi might be a boon for kids with ADHD, as a means to train themselves in being calm and more in control of their minds. Maybe it could be combined with traditional Mindfullness, leading to friendly competitions in being calm and in control of their cat ears (mind).

Hehe, dette blir kanskje litt usamanhengjande. Men “for the sake of speed,” så blir dette nok ganske stream-of-consciousness stil over dette. Hei verd. Det er ei stund sidan eg blogga her, men etter mykje om og men er det her “eg vil bu.”

No vil eg gå til striden, og dette innlegget si kjerne. Nett som Obama har blitt kjend for, å ha ein retorikk tufta på det å ikkje gå rundt grøten. Case in point: Fredspristalen til Obama, der han går rett inn i problematikken uten å nøle. Og det vinn han stort på. Nøye planlagt, mesterligt framført. Heile hendinga var så orkestrert at det einaste usikre ved besøket hans var eit spørsmål. Eit einsleg spørmål fekk pressa stille, nesten lik eit keisamt ritual. Nei, her tok staben til Obama ingen sjangser. Og der vil eg trekka ein parallel. For ein viss statsminister foretok nyleg ei 14 timars signingsferd på vestlandet. Heilt uanmeldt. Nøye planlagt. Snedig orkestrert. Opposisjonen blei parkert. Og folket likeså. Ingen rakk å stille spørsmål, om Mongstad, om Hardangerkablane, om sjukehusstriden. Utfallet var eit høgt volum av glade bilder av ein statsminister fritt for opposisjon, verken på staden eller i media grunna det luftige og godt utforma framlegget som det var vanskeleg å vere imot.

Poverty came knocking

It’s already been some weeks that we have been living in Cape Town. 9 students in a really nice house, with a swimming pool and so on and soforth. We been traveling out into the townships, working and learning about social entrepreneurship. One day it rung on the door, and I rushed to open. I didn’t bother checking the monitor, because we do have a street cam.

Suddenly, I found myself face to face with a guy with a black bag asking if I could let him in. There are two gates between our house and the street, one on the main entrance, another one on the outer wall which surrounds the house. All of us living in the house have clickers which open the metal gates with a simple click. Between me and that bearded bloke was two gates, and I had to press the right button as to not let him completely in. Off course he probably didn’t have any intentions of doing anything wrong, but I didn’t want to let him into the courtyard. My pondering on which button to press while I smalltalked seemed like a small eternity.

Time to sort out some of the thoughts that have sprung up as we have been working at the center.

Monday #

Finalized the contract, and sent it over to Wendy at head office.
Ran into Varkey George and a norwegian physician named Signe (the lady who’d tipped Mari of Varkey and set this whole program in motion).
Roamed around the center discussing the computer skills program, but we couldn’t get far without Sicelo’s input.

Tuesday #

It was raining so heavily, so we postponed going to the schools until the day after.
Contract was approved, but the contract ends during the holidays and that must be arranged for.
We discussed Isaac’s, one of the it – tutors, future employment. Isaac seems quite keen to keep working at K2, which we’ll happily oblige to and keep Sicelo (the head it – tutor.) Later that day we hired a guy named Tando for a two week period of teaching.
Sent out requests for food donations. Asking for aid is not quite the social entrepreneurial way, since it just makes the center reliant on some other organization besides SHAWCO. We’d to it for this time only, but our focus must remain on heightening the center’s income.

Wednesday (today) #

The two schools we were supposed to visit are currently preparing for the holidays, so the principals from both schools were too busy to have us over today. So, we moved it to the day after. We need to get to the schools before Friday, which is the start of the holidays.
Assisted at a handout – event organized by a local N.G.O.. Food was handed out to parents with babies. It seemed to be something of a problem with parents who didn’t carry the proper papers or hadn’t weighed their child at all. Some parents had to be shown away, because they lacked proper proof. A strong experience for us newcomers to be sure.
Finally met up with Sicelo, and he gave us rundown on how the IT – center have been doing as well as giving us a list of points he would like for us to keep in mind. Laura is someone at head office, responsible for Masizikhulise. We should make an appointment with her, and talk about the computer skills program’s future. Also discussed price with Sicelo and Jack, and we landed on R200 for three months of CS training. We will have to see what prices Cilulo charge for their CS training.
Priced the beadwork at R10 – R50. I had some ideas about the seniors who’s making the beads becoming part of a neigbouring organization’s BEE. (Black economic empowerment.)
Tando suddenly became superflous as step-in tutor since Sicelo seems to have been free during the week after all. However it would be wrong to cut off Tando at this point, so we made arrangements. (Not quite sure what they were.) Regardless, it results in Tando being the tutor for these two weeks and splitting the payment with Isaac who left without properly informing Eunice.
Denver, the IT guy, has been contacted and asked to come by on Monday to fix internet for all the computers. We would have to follow up on that, making sure he does show up and teaches Sicelo how to maintain the IT – system.
Decided to offer the security company the kitchen of the side building, which is actually not bad. We came to the decision while considering how to give the IT – center space to grow. Hopefully the security company will find it acceptable, or else we’ll have to make a new proposal.

Research whether or not the seniors who can make beads are available to run bead workshops. More importantly we need to find out if beads can be donated, who owns them?
Make arrangements with Etafeni, for a meeting to air the idea of a job marketing site.

Nyanga – First day

Today we all rose up early to be ready at eight o'clock for Jo (our driver) to pick us up. And after realizing that a small miscommunication had occurred we finally left our place around 9. Good times, hehe. The weather was amazing though, and it didn't take too long before me and Lars had our feet planted on the ground in Nyanga.

It's already our second week here in Cape Town. Last week we were shown around campus and also shown around the different townships (poor communities) where SHAWCO the student organization we're working with operates.

Each of the centers have their own unique characteristics, and I'll try to make a small list of what our class of 17 social entrepreneurs (in training) will be dealing with. Also listed is working in the head office, where some projects are run from. The first week went by with us being introduced to the various centers. We have had time to reflect over where we would like to be stationed, and what projects we would like to pursue over the course of the next three months.

Early in the morning, the sun is shining, had our classmates been pulling our leg? All signs pointed towards a quite nice morning. The plane touched ground, and we went out into the moist “winter” weather.

Meeting Zuki, our awesome big sister, we had to point out that this cold weather seemed just like a chilly summer morning. I didn’t doubt though, that a change of weather would definitively bring the temperature down.
